Exhaust valve control Pillar guide

Does the BMW M3 Have a Valved Exhaust? (G80 and F80)

How do you fully open your exhaust valves on demand? A complete, no nonsense guide to active valved exhausts, the ways to control them, and how to pick the right setup for your car.

Does the BMW M3 Have a Valved Exhaust? (G80 and F80)

The M3 has one of the best soundtracks in its class, and plenty of owners feel they don't hear enough of it. Here's how the factory valved exhaust works on the G80 and F80 M3, why it can sound quieter than you expect, and how to keep the valves open on demand.

Key takeaways

  • Yes, both the G80 / G81 and F80 M3 have a factory valved exhaust, with electric valve actuators the ECU controls.
  • The car decides when the valves open, based on drive mode, revs, load and throttle. Your sound settings influence it, but you can't rely on them to keep the valves open.
  • In some markets the M3 also carries a petrol particulate filter, which softens the sound further.
  • You can open the valves by unplugging them, fitting a blanking plug, coding the car, or fitting a controller. Only a controller keeps quiet one button away with no check engine light.
  • 11MODE has dedicated kits for the G80 / G81 M3 and the F80 M3.

01The short answer

Yes, the BMW M3 has a valved exhaust.

Both the current G80 / G81 M3 and the earlier F80 M3 leave the factory with exhaust valves near the rear mufflers, moved by electric valve actuators on command from the ECU. Open, the exhaust takes a more direct route out and the inline six gets louder and rawer. Closed, it takes the quieter path.

The catch is who decides. On many cars the factory logic is conservative, so the valves can stay shut for much of your driving, even in M modes. That's the gap a controller fills.

BMW M3 (G80): fitting the controller and opening the valves

03The G80 / G81 M3

The G80 sedan and G81 Touring use the S58 twin turbo inline six, with a factory valved exhaust controlled by the ECU. Like most modern M cars, it lets you choose a louder sound setting through its drive modes and settings, but the car still decides when the valves actually open. Depending on the mode, revs and load, they may close again once you settle into a cruise.

The same S58 engine powers the G82 / G83 M4 and the G87 M2, so owners of those cars will recognise the behaviour. More BMW fitments are in the BMW range.

04The F80 M3

The F80 uses the S55 twin turbo inline six and also has factory electric exhaust valves. As with the G80, the ECU decides when they open, and drive mode settings change the behaviour without giving you direct control. The S55 also appears in the F82 / F83 M4 and the F87 M2 Competition.

Valve layouts can differ between cars and markets, which is why the 11MODE kit for your car comes with the number of controllers it needs, shown on the product page. The help centre explains whether your kit has 1 or 2 controllers.

BMW M3 (F80), valves open vs closed

05Why your M3 can sound quieter than it should

  • Conservative valve logic. The ECU balances sound against noise rules and refinement, so the valves can sit closed at idle, low revs and steady cruising. The full logic is in how OEM exhaust valves work.
  • Particulate filters. In some markets the M3 carries a petrol particulate filter, which also softens the sound.
  • Turbocharging. Twin turbos sit in the exhaust path and take some of the edge off the note.
i
Sport mode myth

Sport and Sport Plus may open the valves more often, but they don't stay open all the time and even close depending on the speed, revs and throttle. The car decides when the valves open, not you.

06How to check your M3's valves

  1. Look under the rear. The valves sit near the rear mufflers, with an electric actuator connected to each. The help centre shows where the exhaust valves are located.
  2. Listen at a cold start. On many cars the valves open briefly at start up, which gives you a preview of the open valve sound while stationary.
  3. Check fitment. Run your exact year and model through the fitment finder.

07How to keep your M3's valves open

There are four common routes, and they're not equal:

  • Unplug the actuator. Usually throws a check engine light, stores a fault code and can force limp mode.
  • Fit a blanking plug. Avoids the warning light but locks the valves open, with no quiet mode.
  • Code the car. BMW has a big coding scene, but it needs a specialist or a coding tool, isn't always cleanly reversible, and software changes can be flagged at a dealer. See do you need a tune to open your exhaust valves.
  • Fit a controller. Keeps the valves open on demand, hands control back to the car when you want quiet, and throws no check engine light.

Each method in detail is in how to open your exhaust valves on any car, with costs side by side in controller vs catback vs bypass plug vs tune.

0811MODE for the M3

Definition
Exhaust valve controller

A plug and play device that intercepts the signal to your factory electric exhaust valves and lets you override it, so you can hold the valves open on demand and then hand control back to normal factory behaviour. It allows for maximum exhaust flow for the most sound from the exhaust.

11MODE makes dedicated kits for the G80 / G81 M3 and the F80 M3. The controller is wireless: it plugs in at the valve actuator in minutes with no tools, no control box and no cables to route, though as with all car mods, professional installation is always recommended. ON keeps the valves fully open in any drive mode, and OFF hands full control back to the car. One remote runs both valves on twin valve cars, and the memory function remembers your last setting the next time you start the car. Across the range, 11MODE fits 1,000+ make, model and year combinations across 25+ brands.

It throws no check engine light, changes no software, and unplugs in minutes with the car back to standard. Full disclosure: 11MODE makes these, so this guide has a horse in the race. The comparison above shows the other routes honestly.

11
The 11MODE take

The M3 already has more sound potential waiting to be unlocked. The S58 and S55 are brilliant engines held back by conservative valve logic. Keep the valves open for the drive you've been looking forward to, and hand them back to the car for the commute.

Noise regulations vary by country and state, and these products are sold for off-road and track use, so check the rules where you drive before running your valves open on the street.

09Frequently asked questions

Does the BMW M3 have a valved exhaust?

Yes. Both the G80 / G81 and F80 M3 have factory exhaust valves moved by electric actuators, which the ECU opens and closes.

Does the F80 M3 have exhaust flaps?

Yes. The F80 has factory electric exhaust valves, often called flaps. The ECU decides when they open based on drive mode, revs, load and throttle.

How many exhaust valves does the G80 M3 have?

The G80 runs a twin valve setup. The 11MODE kit comes with two controllers, one for each valve as shown on the product page, and one remote controls both.

Can I keep my M3's exhaust valves open without coding?

Yes. A plug and play controller keeps them open on demand with no coding and no software changes.

Will opening the valves throw a check engine light on my M3?

It depends on the method. A bare unplug usually triggers one and can force limp mode. A blanking plug avoids it, and a quality controller throws no check engine light.

Does opening the M3's valves add power?

Not exactly. Opening the valves changes how your car sounds, and power stays the same.

Is it legal to run my M3's valves open?

Noise regulations vary by country and state, and these products are sold for off-road and track use, so check the rules where you drive before running your valves open on the street.

10The bottom line

Your M3 has a valved exhaust and a loud setting hiding the full sound potential. If you want your exhaust's full sound on your terms, check your car, pick the G80 / G81 or F80 kit, and turn it to 11.
